A safari in Samburu offers an opportunity to explore all the three less-visited reserves ( Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba) which means fewer crowds, giving you a more intimate safari experience. These three reserves lies on the edge of northern Kenya's arid savannahs, home to an astonishing population of wildlife including several species unique to the region like the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk and the blue legged Ostrich. The Reserve is also home to Lion, Cheetah, Buffalo and look out for the shy Leopard lying lazily on a tree. Encountering the traditional Samburu people is another highlight of visiting this off-the-beaten-track wilderness area. The 450 bird species will also excite birders. The most popular mode of getting to Samburu is by road, typically starting and ending in Nairobi, with the choice of vehicles being a 4x4 Landcruiser Jeep or the less costly Safari Minibus (Tour Van). The trip from Nairobi to Samburu takes anything from 5 to 7 hours depending on which camp has been booked for your stay. The benefit of a safari by road is the typically lower cost as well as getting to see and experience more of the real Kenyan countryside. The downside is that stretches of road on the route are in below average condition.
Flying Safaris offer the convenience of reaching Samburu within 1.5 hours from Nairobi. Flights take off from Wilson airport in Nairobi daily, and upon arrival at the airstrip in the Samburu, guests are received and transfered to their respective Camp or Lodge in time for lunch. Game drives are provided in 4x4 Safari Vehicles by the property.
There are two basic types of Safari vehicles used in Kenya and Tanzania for wildlife and adventure safaris. These are the Tour Minibus / Van and the 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser Jeeps.
